Grain Market Update

Added September 14, 2009

Corn Price Update

Upper Midwest (Des Moines, IA)
9/10/09
Trade has been at a near standstill, as demand from processors was very light, leaving producers with much uncertainty.  Some organic grains are seeing no demand, such as rye. Organic grain and feedstuff prices were mixed with corn prices lower and wheat prices higher.  Oat prices were steady.  New crop corn is being priced from $5.50 to $6.50 per bushel.  Alfalfa prices were stronger this period from $.90 to $1.00 per point.

All prices FOB price per bushel except where stated (trucking cost needs to be added)

Eastern Cornbelt (Springfield, IL)
9/10/09
Demand and offerings were light to moderate. Demand and offerings were light to moderate.  Buying interest continued to move slowly as favorable weather conditions are greening up pastures and crops.   Feed grade corn was steady.  Sales for feed grade wheat increased this reporting period which helped to strengthen prices. Some potential buyers have reported difficulties locating feed or food grade soybeans. Reports of feed soybeans ranging from 18.00 to 20.00 per bushel.

However, most of the Cornbelt has experienced plenty of moisture this summer which has produced some poor quality of wheat.  Confirmed cases of wheat affected with vomitoxin and sprouting has spread throughout the eastern states. Lack of fresh news items and ideal growing conditions for the Cornbelt helped to weaken prices.

All prices FOB price per bushel except where stated (trucking cost needs to be added)
