With the NODPA Field Days just days away, we would like to dedicate this e-newsletter to Field Days Highlights. We hope that you can make it to this year’s event as we have two days packed with wonderful speakers, a tradeshow filled with excellent resource exhibits, a documentary film (to be shown twice), and fantastic opportunities to network and provide input and direction to the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance for 2011 and beyond.
The 10th Annual Field Days of the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance will be taking place October 7th and 8th at the MOFGA Fairgrounds in Unity, Maine. Producers and resource professionals are encouraged to attend, and walk-ins are welcome. Scholarship money is available for organic dairy producers to cover travel, lodging, registration and the cost of a relief milker while you are gone. Contact us today!
Thursday, October 7th - Starting at 1 PM
Renewable Energy on the Farm: Projects, Strategies and Opportunities: We will have concurrent demonstrations, workshops, and displays at the Common Ground Fairgrounds, a nearby greenhouse, as well as a couple of farm tours to see. Topics will include Methane Digester Technology, Oilseed Production and Processing, Solar Thermal System, Farm Energy Resources and Audit information, Wind Turbine Project, and Energy Efficient/Renewable Energy Projects.
Thursday Evening will include a Social Hour, a meal of fresh organic and local fare, and a keynote address by Miles McEvoy, Deputy Administrator of the National Organic Program, USDA. We will wrap up the evening with NODPA's Annual Meeting, where we will review what has happened over the past year and set priorities for 2011.
Friday, October 8th, Starting at 7 am
Friday will start bright and early with breakfast and a Producer Only Meeting from 7 - 9 am. For non-producer attendees, continental breakfast will be available from 7-9am; we will be showing the documentary film, "What's Organic about Organic?" and the Tradeshow area will be open for business.
At 9:00 am, NOP's Deputy Administrator, Miles McEvoy and Director of Standards, Melissa Bailey will answer questions about the Access to Pasture Rule.
At 10:30 am we will have a Panel Session on Supply Management. The Canadian Quota model, the US Quota model, and the Free Market model will be covered in presentation and panel discussion format. Speakers on the panel will include Lawrence Andres, Canadian organic dairy farmer, owner and President of Harmony Organic Processing; Travis Forgues, CROPP Cooperative Board of Director and CROPP Coop member-owner of the dairy pool; and a Horizon Organic Representative (invited).
The afternoon sessions will include a talk about Calf and Cow Care by Lawrence Andres, a panel session discussing the challenges and opportunities for On-farm Energy Production,and Dr Heather Darby will wrap up the day with a talk on Renewable Energy and the Production of Small Grains, Oil Seed and Heritage Seed.
